Modern cities depend on energy efficiencies and a healthy ecology. We depend on our green space for exercise, fresh air and socializing. As a City we need to value our environment, acknowledge the services it provides and incorporate this into practice. We need continue to improve how we take care of our green infrastructure, dispose of waste, use fossil fuels, provide food resources and move people in and around the city.
a. Establish the planned Recycling Depots in the next year and plan for more over each of the next five years.
b. Plan and require developers to build neighbourhoods that provide for residents’ service, employment, and transportation needs.
c. Update the Development Agreement Parameters to reflect innovation in development practices as they pertain to parks, such as watershed management, ecologically significant natural lands, and active and passive parks spaces.
d. Establish a Food Policy Council to advise on food security in Winnipeg.
e. Invest in transit infrastructure, U-Pass and low income bus pass to make the City more accessible for more people, reduce the number of cars on the road, and reduce the overall carbon footprint. All of this would save on road maintenance costs.
f. Complete a Green Space Master Plan for the planning and management of the City’s natural areas and green space infrastructure. This should include an urban forest management plan, and clearly state the City’s intentions for maintaining and growing its parks and green space inventory. This includes protecting city-owned golf courses from sale and private development.
